Quando è stato pubblicato per la prima volta, questo libro cercava di indagare in che misura le contrapposte letture dei testi di Thomas Hobbes fossero determinate dalle scelte metodologiche e culturali degli interpreti e in che misura, invece, vi concorresse lo stesso Hobbes con le proprie ambiguità. L’analisi toccava alcuni temi fondamentali dell’antropologia e della politica hobbesiana. Rilevava che nelle pagine di Hobbes vive una umanità inquieta tra paure, conquiste e ambivalenze. Scorgeva, comunque, nel mitico Leviatano, accanto ad una struttura monolitica, anche forme più articolate, perfino suscettibili di alcuni gradi di partecipazione. Constatando nel filosofo inglese una certa “logica dei doppi pensieri”, questo studio vuole ancora oggi documentare quanto siano inadeguate le valutazioni elaborate sulla base di letture parziali o di impostazioni unilaterali. Il vero Hobbes è ricco di motivi ed elementi contraddittori e sfugge a qualsiasi interpretazione univoca e rettilinea. Esso è talmente fecondo di suggestioni da dimostrarsi utile anche per scrivere una pagina della storia della filosofia dello sport. L’interrogativo “Quale Hobbes?”, dunque, è destinato a durare e a porsi continuamente come un problema irrisolto, costituendo in tal modo il fascino più vero per i suoi lettori ed interpreti.
