La question de l’identité est une question majeure des sciences sociales, et, en particulier, de la philosophie et de la sémiotique, mais ce qui est abordé dans ce livre est moins la question de l’identité proprement dite qu’une façon de la mettre à distance: au lieu de penser l’identité à partir du sujet qui en est porteur, nous souhaitons ici la poser à partir du regard de l’autre. Il s’agit d’abord d’une sémiotique de l’alientité, qui questionne les mots par lesquelles elle s’exprime et par lesquels elle est désignée. Une deuxième approche de l’alientité proposée ici est l’analyse des modalités de son articulation de l’espace et du temps. Une troisième approche de l’alientité est celle de la limite. Enfin, un quatrième champ de l’alientité est celui de ses expressions, en particulier de la traduction. C’est que la perspective de l’alientité que nous proposons ici est la recherche d’une signi cation des multiples gures de l’autre.
