Le collezioni, che annoverano artisti sia italiani che stranieri, sono frutto di percorsi diversi, ma continui e talvolta plurisecolari, che hanno visto i vari istituti bancari manifestare non solo un'attitudine collezionistica, ma, spesso, una precisa volontà mecenatistica di promozione culturale. Questo volume ripercorre un arco di tempo lungo cinque secoli, che si sovrappone alla storia del Sanpaolo: dalla nascita, nel 1563, della Confraternita Compagnia di San Paolo, a tutte le successive fasi dell'evoluzione dell'istituto bancario.
