Parlare di fotografia oggi è un po’ come parlare del tempo, argomento logoro per uso e manipolazioni ermeneutiche. Non era così quando nel 1978 Piergiorgio Firinu pubblicò “La gabbia sui Pirenei”. Erano anni in cui la fotografia iniziava a occupare uno spazio nel mondo dell’arte. Il sottotitolo del libro era “Teoria sull'uso dell’immagine fotografica”. La prima edizione del libro è del 1978. Ferveva il dibattito sul libro di McLuhan pubblicato in Italia nel 1967 da Garzanti “Gli strumenti del comunicare”. Gli artisti che hanno pubblicato immagini e testi sul libro di Firinu, sono i precursori di tendenze che sarebbero dilagante nel mondo dell’arte. Nel recensire “La Gabbia sui Pirenei”, sul Corriere della Sera, Giuseppe Turroni rilevò l’originalità dell’assunto. Lo stesso argomento era stato trattato dall'autore nei seminari con Beppe Risso all’Accademia Albertina di Torino, alla PepperdineUniversity di Malibu CA. (USA), nei vari dibattiti e seminari con Harold Rosemberg, Harry Lieberman, Harold Szeemann. La riedizione del libro offre un'occasione ai giovani per conoscere l’origine di fenomeni artistici che oggi sono storia.
