『한국 근대사 산책』은 『고독한 한국인』등의 저작으로 잘 알려진 사회문화 비평가 강준만 교수가 경제뿐 아니라 삶의 전 영역을 아우르며 개화기부터 일제강점기까지의 시대를 종합하고 있는 한국 근대사 책이다. 저자는 '자위'와 '자학'을 넘어선 근대사 읽기를 통해 근대 한국의 풍경에 대한 다양한 주장들을 편견 없이 보여줌으로써 ‘교과서’가 지니는 경직성에서 벗어나 한국 근대사를 생동감 넘치게 몽타주할 수 있게 한다. 또한 전문 학자들의 논문은 물론 당대 신문기사에 이르기까지 수많은 자료를 망라하여 지나간 역사의 파편들을 큰 그림으로 종합하면서 ‘역사는 커뮤니케이션이다’라는 이해를 바탕으로 보다 큰 그림으로서의 역사, ‘메타 역사’ 서술을 시도하고 있다. 저자는 조선조 500년이 양반사회의 출현으로 유교와 전통문화가 발전하는 '안정'이라는 축복을 받았으나, 그로 인해 개인의 창의력이 말살된 것은 저주였다고 이야기한다. 개화기는 외세의 침투 ·침략이 이루어진 가운데 그 모순이 폭발한 시기였다. 저자는 외세에게 힘없이 당한 망국의 시간이 저주였으나 축복을 만들어낼 수 있는 심적 터전이 되었다고 주장한다. 부끄러워할 것도 많지만 자랑할 것도 많았기에, 어느 한 쪽에도 집착하지 않는 시각, 역사를 보는 제3의 길로 한국 근대사를 다시 본다. 강준만의 『한국 근대사 산책』 제3권은 개화기 역사에 대한 ‘자위(自慰)’와 ‘자학(自虐)’을 모두 넘어서 제 3의 길이라는 시각으로 아관파천에서 하와이 이민까지의 이야기를 다룬다.
