Description
Een land in omwenteling... een vrouw die tegen de conventies vecht... een vurige maar verboden liefde... Brazilië 1885: de 17-jarige Vit ria da Silva leidt een onbezorgd leventje op de koffieplantage van haar ouders, de fazenda Boavista. De verbouw van koffie, het 'groene goud', heeft haar familie rijkdom en aanzien gebracht. Het is een tijd van sociale tegenstellingen, waarin de rijke koffiebaronnen hun decadente leven leiden, terwijl de arme slaven aan de willekeur van hun heren zijn overgeleverd. De beeldschone Vita is een gewilde partij, maar niemand heeft haar hart nog kunnen winnen. Totdat ze verliefd wordt op - uitgerekend - de rebelse journalist Le n Castro, een idealist die verbeten vecht voor dat ene doel: de afschaffing van de slavernij. Le n bedreigt niet alleen de waarden en normen van de familie da Silva maar ook hun bestaan, want de toekomst van Boavista is afhankelijk van slaven. Vita's ouders verbieden haar tevergeefs de omgang met Le n. Midden tussen de velden, omgeven door de betoverende geur van koffiebloesem, zweren de geliefden eeuwige trouw. Maar is hun liefde sterk genoeg? Als Vita ontdekt dat ze zwanger is, blijkt Le n spoorloos verdwenen te zijn. Terwijl de eerste slavenopstanden het land opschrikken, neemt de vertwijfelde Vita een beslissing met verregaande gevolgen. En de prijs voor haar liefde voor Len is hoger dan ze ooit voor mogelijk had gehouden...
