Sebastian Nedergaard is een succesvolle psychiater en gelukkig met zijn vrouw en drie kinderen... totdat er een nieuwe patiënte wordt opgenomen op zijn afdeling, Johanne Jensen. Johanne is op het eerste gezicht psychotisch, maar er lijkt meer met haar aan de hand, iets wat Sebastian met al zijn vakkennis niet kan verklaren. Een medepatiënt die lijdt aan een depressie, Cornelius Kappelgaard, meent wel te weten wat Johanne mankeert. Hij is dertig jaar zendeling in Tanzania geweest en in Afrika heeft hij veel gezien van de macht van de duivel. Daarom veronderstelt hij dat Johanne in de macht is van een kwade geest. Dat strookt absoluut niet met Sebastians overtuiging: hij gelooft niet in God en ook niet in bovennatuurlijke machten. Met de komst van deze twee patiënten komt Sebastians leven in een stroomversnelling. Zijn huwelijk staat onder grote druk, doordat hij al jaren meer aandacht heeft voor zijn werk dan voor zijn gezin. En terwijl zijn huwelijk ten onder gaat aan zijn carrière, lijkt hij zijn carrière op het spel te zetten door zich in te laten met bovennatuurlijke zaken.
