Is de loopbaan van vrouwelijke auteurs in Vlaanderen een 'wedloop vol hindernissen'? Kampen schrijfsters met meer problemen dan hun mannelijke collega's tijdens het uitbouwen van hun carrière? Een onderzoek aan de Gentse Universiteit zocht een antwoord op deze vragen. Men verzamelde cijfermateriaal rond diverse aspecten van de schrijversloopbaan van zowel mannen als vrouwen in Vlaanderen in de periode 1980-2001. DE man-vrouwverhoudingen binnen het literaire veld werden afgemeten aan de literaire productie, de toegekende subsidies en uitgereikte literaire prijzen, en de literaire lezingen die auteurs geven in scholen, bibliotheken en verenigingen. Naast dit kwantitatieve onderzoeksgedeelte werden tweeëntwintig diepte-interviews afgenomen met mannelijke en vrouwelijke auteurs. Hierbij ging het vooral om de problemen die zij tijdens hun loopbaan ervaren met de algmene maatschappelijke context (sociale klasse, opleiding, gezinssituatie etc.). Ook in de literaire wereld blijken de gender stereotypen in het nadeel van vrouwen te werken. Al te vaak moet de schrijverscarrière het afleggen tegen de zorg voor kinderen en het huishouden.
