Het onverslaanbare Ajax van Louis van Gaal
Wat had Ajax in de Champions League te zoeken in het seizoen 1994/1995? Slechts één speler had al ervaring met het kampioenenbal: Frank Rijkaard. Het elftal bestond voornamelijk uit een stel jonge honden, nog onwetend van hun kwaliteiten en grenzen. Louis van Gaal zag zijn beoogde spits Ronaldo naar PSV vertrekken. ‘Maar wij hebben Patrick Kluivert,’ blufte de Ajaxtrainer. En daarmee begon een seizoen waarin Ajax heel Europa zou verrassen.
Het is inmiddels twintig jaar geleden dat Ajax de Champions League won. Journalist Mike van Damme sprak uitgebreid met trainer Louis van Gaal, aanvoerder Danny Blind, ontdekking Patrick Kluivert, spelmaker Jari Litmanen en vele anderen. Het leverde een indrukwekkend verhaal op over het succes van 1995.
Mike van Damme (1981) is werkzaam als (eind)redacteur bij Ajax Life, de krant van de Supportersvereniging Ajax. Hij schreef eerder ook voor onder andere Het Parool en Elf Voetbal.
