Parallellt löper en berättelse om öden och äventyr ombord på M/S Kalypso, i vilken sjömannen-potatisskalaren John Bergström redovisar den tillvaro av bottenlös tristess som för Greg Bengtsson ter sig drömlikt åtråvärd. Ärans portar är en briljant skildring av 50-talets undre bohemvärld i Stockholm. Men under den glittrande ytan döljer sig andra stämningar – en underström av bitter ironi och upprorisk fränhet liksom värme och djup mänsklig förståelse.
