Året är 1918. De danska tvillingarna Kaj och Ib Gottlieb reser till Finland för att strida som frivilliga i inbördeskriget, och deltar i stormningen av Tammerfors.Efter deras möte med krigets ohyggliga verklighet följer vi bröderna, var för sig och sida vid sida. Från den sena ungdomen till de första ålderskrämporna, genom förälskelser och besvikelser, drifter och sjukdomar, till Leipzig, Paris och Genève. Via 1920-talets fredstid och jazzrytmer när Europa blomstrar, vidare till 1930-talets oroligheter med tilltagande antisemitism och nazism.Och så är det plötsligt krig igen. Och med det kommer ockupation och motståndskamp, och Kaj och Ib tvingas navigera i ett riskfyllt spel bland Gestapomännen på Köpenhamns gator.Avgrunden är en mörk och storslagen berättelse om Europa, om kriget och freden, om ondskan och den förmenta godheten. Och, inte minst, en psykologiskt knivskarp skildring av två bröders samvaro i en omänsklig värld.
