I mars 2006 är det 100 år sedan författaren Artur Lundkvist föddes. Den kubansk-svenske författaren René Vázquez Díaz kände Lundkvist väl under hans sista år. I denna bok tecknar han en subjektiv bild av en oerhört infallsrik, orädd, för att inte säga halsstarrig, författare. Det handlar om hur Lundkvist blev ledargestalt för de svenska proletärförfattarna och för svensk litterär modernism och om hans starka politiska engagemang. Hur han efter andra världskriget blev den mest bereste av svenska författare och den som i stort sett på egen hand öppnade världen för litteraturintresserade svenskar. Därefter följde den hårda, infekterade debatten om den tredje ståndpunkten under 1950-talet, då Lundkvist bland annat betecknade som halvkommunist av Herbert Tingsten. Motsättningarna handlade inte minst om synen på USA:s roll i världen, där Lundkvist mycket tidigt förde fram en frän kritik som förebådade den proteststorm som skulle komma under Vietnamkrigets år. Den sedermera så uppburne och inflytelserike ledamoten av Svenska Akademien var under en lång period betraktad som samhällsfiende och i hemlighet utsatt för övervakning. I boken ingår också ett urval av Artur Lundkvist mest intressanta politiska artiklar.
