Sommaren börjar lida mot sitt slut och makarna Britt och Nils-Olof återvänder till stan från sitt torp i Bergslagen. Väl hemma i Djursholm ringer en okänd kvinna och skäller ut Britt, och en sten kastas genom deras fönster. Britt arbetar inom sjukvården med att handlägga sena aborter. Kan det vara en av kvinnorna som fått avslag som nu utsätter Britt för trakasserier? En av de kvinnor som nekats abort är den 38-åriga Lisa som efter sin mors död lider av stark sjukhusskräck – tanken på att föda ett barn gör henne suicidal. Hon läggs in på en psykiatrisk avdelning och Britt försöker påverka Lisas psykiatriker att ändra beslutet om aborten, men han vägrar. Lisas tillstånd blir allt allvarligare och Britt måste finna så kallade synnerliga skäl för att få igenom en sen abort och på så sätt rädda henne. Men tiden är knapp – och är det verkligen barnafödandet som Lisa fruktar mest av allt? ULF DURLING [f. 1940] är en svensk kriminalförfattare och psykiater. Tillsammans med bland annat Ulla Trenter och Jan-Olof Ekholm grundade han Föreningen Kriminalförfattare i Stockholm. 1971 debuterade han med pusseldeckaren Gammal ost, för vilken han belönades med Svenska Deckarakademins debutantpris.
