The authors of this joint work, part of the 'Iron Roads in Africa' project, are distinguished archaeologists, historians, metallographic engineers, anthropologists and sociologists. As they trace the history of iron in Africa, including many technical details and discussion of the social, economic and cultural effects of the industry, they restore to the continent an 'important yardstick of civilization that it has, until now, been denied'. UNESCO's study of iron metallurgy in Africa is intended to draw attention to the contribution that African metallurgists--smelters and blacksmiths--have made to the technical heritage of humanity
