"The opening of the 2013 TUNZA International Youth Conference on 11 February was marked with the launch of the publication TUNZA Acting for a Better World: GEO-5 for Youth. The report, based on the United Nations Environment Programme's flagship environmental assessment, Global Environment Outlook: Environment for the Future We Want (GEO-5), is written by youth for youth. It examines a variety of trends related to the Earth's system; equips youth with cutting edge knowledge on environmental challenges; and explores whether internationally agreed environmental goals are being achieved. The report also features the efforts of young people are challenging the status quo in their homes and their communities in order to protect the Earth's atmosphere, land, water and biological diversity. It includes a call to action and invites youth to "dive in, get informed, be inspired, and use GEO-5 for Youth" to educate their friends, family, and others in their surroundings. As UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon outlined in the foreword of the report, "TUNZA: Acting for a Better World is based on sound science - the bedrock of information needed by activists and policy-makers alike. By learning about the state of our environment and the options available for safeguarding it, we can all contribute to the effective solutions that will improve the state of our planet." The report is divided into three main sections. The first section "Our world and its challenges today" considers the main messages of GEO-5 and links them to best practice examples of successful action from around the world. The second section "The future we want" explores the process and impact of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) from a youth perspective, whereas the third section "Change countdown" introduces key concepts like the green economy and education for sustainable development"--Publisher's description.
