Een huiveringwekkend verhaal; even de lift pakken zal nooit meer hetzelfde zijn! Maandag. Vier mensen stappen in een lift in Manhattan. Ze drukken op de knop voor hun verdieping, maar de lift klimt door naar de top, waar hij een paar seconden pauzeert – voordat hij valt. Recht naar beneden, tot hij te pletter slaat. Het lijkt een gruwelijk ongeluk. Maar op dinsdag vindt er opnieuw een incident plaats, in een andere wolkenkrabber. En op woensdag weer. In New York – een van de meest verticale steden ter wereld – breekt chaos uit. Dit kan geen toeval zijn. Dit is een koude, berekenende poging de stad te terroriseren. En het werkt: kantoorwerknemers weigeren nog naar hun werk te gaan en hulpdiensten rukken niet meer uit voor oproepen op hoge etages. Wie zit hierachter? Hebben deze dodelijke sabotageacties iets te maken met het lijk zonder vingers dat werd gevonden? In een race tegen de klok proberen twee ervaren rechercheurs en een journalist de antwoorden te vinden voordat de nieuwste, en hoogste, woontoren van de stad op donderdag feestelijk wordt geopend.
