In een prachtige stijl vertelt Eveline Vanhaverbeke (Kortrijk, 1971) het spannende verhaal rond de vondst van een medaillon met een mysterieuze boodschap, een kistje met vreemde familiefotos en een onbekend dagboek van Guido Gezelle waar bladen uit zijn gescheurd. September 1871. De zestienjarige Arthur Rimbaud, zelfverklaard poëtisch genie, ontvlucht Charleville en zijn familie. Paul Verlaine wacht hem op in Parijs. Ondanks het grote leeftijdsverschil en het prille huwelijk van Verlaine storten de twee dichters zich in een passionele homoseksuele relatie. Januari 1931. Na de dood van tante Mi blijft Louise in het Kortrijk van de jaren dertig alleen achter met haar broertje Marcel. Tante Mi zorgde voor de twee sinds de dood van hun ouders bij een trein ongeval. In die jaren kwam met enige regelmaat een sinistere man langs, gekleed in een lange zwarte jas en een hoge hoed. Tante Mi stuurde Louise en Marcel dan de deur uit en sprak urenlang met de man, die Louise de boodschapper noemde. Het medaillon dat Louise als erfstuk heeft gekregen, bevat een mysterieuze boodschap. Haar zoektocht naar het antwoord zet een serie gebeurtenissen in gang waarin Louise onverbiddelijk mee gezogen wordt. Via de Vlaamse dichter Guido Gezelle komt ze bij de twee Parijse dichters terecht. Samen met haar vriend, de kreupele maar geniale Leon, gaat Louise op zoek naar de betekenis van alle verwijzingen naar Rimbaud en Gezelle. Als Louise dicht bij de waarheid komt, is daar onverwacht die duistere figuur uit haar kindertijd, de boodschapper.
