El momento de la Antigüedad tardía en el que Ireneo escribió su monumental tratado anti-gnóstico constituye un período privilegiado para el investigador de la historia y de la fenomenología de la religión. En tal sentido, analizar la obra de San Ireneo no implica exhumar una pieza literaria proveniente de un pasado obsoleto; por el contrario, el contacto con el vigoroso pensamiento de este Padre del siglo II nos hace estar atentos a los signos de una de las preocupaciones religiosas más originarias del primer cristianismo, cuya aparición trajo aparejada una comprensión particular de las nociones de khrónos y kairós con las que se abre un horizonte de significación que involucra de manera decisiva al hombre, especialmente a partir de lo que conocemos como la Encarnación del Verbo. Esto explica el hecho de que la antropología cristiana primitiva se fuera configurando desde la cristología. Por lo tanto, para acceder a la concepción de hombre que está en la base de nuestra tradición cristiana occidental resulta indispensable indagar en las raíces de ese pensamiento. Como ninguno de sus predecesores y sucesores, Ireneo recoge el magisterio de Pablo y de Juan, quienes al relacionar a Cristo con Adán, colocan al hombre en el epicentro de la historia introduciendo de manera decisiva la carne y su temporalidad en el ámbito de la salvación. En este libro se analiza la polémica de San Ireneo con Marción y con los valentinianos desde las intuiciones de "tiempo" y de "acontecimiento" con la ponderación que los textos gnósticos merecen por su original metafísica cristiana, tantas veces denostada en las noticias de los heresiólogos, quienes revelan en muchas ocasiones no haberlos conocido lo suficiente.
