En Historia del Comunismo en Chile. La era de Recabarren (1912-1924), Sergio Grez reconstruye el trayecto del lento arraigo inicial del comunismo en este país, intentando seguir la senda de su intervención organizada en las luchas sociales y políticas. En este libro se relata y analiza la historia sui generis de un Partido Socialista latinoamericano influenciado por el marxismo de la II Internacional, que se transformó íntegramente en Partido Comunista afiliado a la III Internacional sin desprendimientos ni escisiones significativas: la historia del Partido Obrero Socialista (POS) y de los primeros años del Partido Comunista de Chile (PCCh), desde la fundación del primer referente (1912) hasta el suicidio de Luis Emilio Recabarren (1924), su principal ideólogo y organizador.
