2019年5月1日，日本正式將年號從「平成」改為「令和」，展開日本的新紀元。回顧明治到平成這一百五十年的歷史，日本從亞洲邊陲的島國，躍升為最先進、繁榮的國家。但是，日本也引發了許多極端事件，例如：關東大地震時虐殺朝鮮人、紙醉金迷的泡沫經濟、犯下毒氣事件的奧姆真理教，我們又該如何理解？
 
作者井上亮運用身為記者的直覺，揭露日本近代史的真實。在這些讓人匪夷所思的事件中，可以發現政府宣傳、新聞媒體、社會輿論不斷煽動大眾，造成一次又一次群眾狂熱的「浪潮」。
 
本書並非揭露日本的黑歷史，或是緬懷往昔的美好，而是希望讀者不論美醜，正視歷史的真實。同時，在這個假新聞充斥，輿論帶風向的世代，我們也必須從中思辨，邁向更好的未來！
