　　　　在十九世紀捕鯨人、商人、政府官員、布爾什維克、美國人、俄羅斯人，這些外來者來到白令海峽之前，嚴寒雪白的北極大地，長久以來都是弓頭鯨、海象、馴鹿、狐狸等野生動物的家園，地底還蘊藏了黃金、石油、錫等豐富的礦藏。在這片土地上，自古以來居住著伊努皮亞特人、尤皮克人和楚克奇人，他們發展出與大自然共存的生活方式和價值觀，認為一切都是自然的循環與輪迴，一隻弓頭鯨會觀察人類是否值得獻上自己的生命，坦然死在獵人的魚叉之下。而人類必須抱持著敬意來看待鯨魚的死亡，否則鯨魚永遠不會出現在人類面前。
　當資本主義與共產主義的信徒踏上這塊土地的時候，他們無所不用其極想要將北極的一切，轉化成推動經濟成長與國家權力的能量，以及實踐各自時間和價值觀的場域。人們獵殺弓頭鯨、馴養馴鹿、開採金礦、探鑽石油，將眼前的大自然變成可以量化的利潤和計畫目標。而原先住在這裡的原住民，則被改造成符合這些意識形態理想的美國人和蘇聯人。
　　但是，鯨魚學會躲避、海象開始警戒，極地氣候則遏阻了人類的進逼，大自然也對現代文明的入侵作出了回應。德穆思教授結合歷史、環境、科學，以及自身生活在北極地區的經驗，完整再現了這段文明與自然、人類與非人類之間交會與衝突的歷史。
