從秦始皇創制開始，皇帝就成為帝制中國統治者的稱號。在長城以北的內亞也出現了由單于領導的匈奴帝國。後來征服中國的內亞統治者，如遼金元清等征服王朝，其統治者也採用了皇帝的稱號。皇帝不僅存在於中國本部，甚至影響到了週邊文化與民族。

漢唐間的轉換是中國歷史上重要的變化，宋代的皇權歷經五代十國軍人以兄弟、義子武力獲取天下的經驗教訓，獲得權力之後至少在趙匡胤始，開始做得不只是收歸軍事、財政、地方兵權、政治，而是將權力核心緊緊抓在中央，並且強化自身訊息的溝通管道。

從宋到清，經歷了遼金元等異族統治，清代既是異族統治，又沿襲了部分明代的皇帝制度。雍正年間，因為奏摺制度的實施，軍機處的創建，皇帝可以事無巨細地掌握臣工言動，權力集中，因而被歷史學者視為中國歷史上皇權獨裁之顛峰。

清末民初的中國，面臨的是一急劇轉變的時代。上從國家型態、政治運作與思想文化型態，下至日常生活方方面面，皆被人們重新思考、檢驗。傳統中國的皇帝制度，自是各方人士的論爭焦點。

從更廣闊的角度來看，中國有皇帝，日本有天皇，兩者都是世襲制，通過中國與日本的比較，了解其中的差異與獨特性，讓讀者更能把握中國歷史的獨特性。
