二十世紀的九○年代,人類藉由數位媒體超乎想像的成長速度,見證了一場所謂的「數位革命」(digital revolution)。而各種數位科技的發展與應用,不僅全面地滲透至人們的日常生活之中,更深刻地影響了人類的感官刺激、思維與經驗。儘管對科技文化(techno-culture)概念的提陳,到了近年才成為顯學,但是Bruce Mazlish早在機械文明最興盛的二十世紀六、七○年代便重新思考「人」與「機械」的互動關係。Mazlish站在大轉折的脈絡中認為人類與機械的互動關係已經不能單純地將之放置在主客體的關係中。一方面,因為人們已經慢慢地將自己社會的演進過程與機械工具的發展融合在一起;另一方面,現代社會的人類將同樣的科學概念用來協助解釋他們自己的工作、他擁有機械的工作以及物質的演進,以致我們已經無法思考沒有機械協助的人類文明是怎樣的情景。Mazlish認為人類形上自覺的轉變便是所謂的「第四轉折」(the fourth discontinuity),亦是生存在工業化世界中和諧地接受機械的必然本質。換言之,不僅人與機械的關係已經不能單純地被切割,許多文化象徵形式的再現也漸漸地與機械緊密地結合。有鑑於此,《媒介擬想》便以「數位媒體與科技文化」作為本期(第四期)的主題,從多元的角度探析當代數位媒體高度發展的過程中,人類與數位科技互動而形成的科技文化之種種面向。在收錄的九篇文章中,關注的議題涵蓋了科技形式轉變的現象與產業的變化、新科技文化對傳統影視觀念與人際關係的影響、科技文化的哲學論述,以及使用者╱消費者在科技文化中的角色轉換。
