那時候，我們住在鄉下。父親在離家幾十里的鎮上教書。母親帶著我們兄妹兩個，住在村子的最東頭。這個村子，叫做芳村。芳村不大，也不過百十戶人家，樹卻有很多，楊樹、柳樹、香椿樹、刺槐樹。還有一種樹，到現在我都不知道它的名字，葉子肥厚，長得極茂盛，樹幹上常常有一種小蟲子，長鬚，薄薄的翅子，伏在那裡一動不動。待要悄悄把手伸過去的時候，小東西卻忽然一張翅子，飛走了。
