La fuerza y lo descarnado del estilo del autor revelan su vigencia: aún hoy, más de un siglo después de ser publicados por primera vez, los cuentos podrían leerse, en líneas generales, como reflejo de la situación de cualquier pequeño trabajador o campesino latinoamericano.
