"This book is an attempt to ensure that traditional knowledge is not lost and that ecosystems are protected for future generations. It is the result of a collaboration of nine expert Marshallese healers, members of clans who possess their own special medicines, and numerous others who are familiar with folk or general remedies. It describes more than 270 traditional medicinal treatments, all of which use the plants of the Marshall Islands, with a particular focus on the use of traditional medicine for the treatment of women. Given the fragile atoll environment of the Marshall Islands, the range of uses of the 56 plants identified in this study is extraordinary. The diversity of treatments is testimony to the creativity and resourcefulness of Marshallese healers who, through training, careful experimentation, inspiration and dreams, have used their limited resources for the good of their women, men and children. Publication of this knowledge supports the growing worldwide trend to incorporate time-tested traditional medicinal practices into modern health systems." --Publisher.
