本書先以風箏的意象作為開場，帶出故事的主人翁鍾肇政，再以倒敘的手法從他出生開始寫起，到他畢業後擔任代課教員、青年師範學校甫畢業就被被徵召為學徒兵，而後終戰。終戰後的新生活，可以看到鍾肇政如何克服改朝換代後的時代鉅變、語言障礙、工作適應的難題，看到他純真的戀愛過程，再到他成家了，新娘卻已非伊人的惆悵。鍾肇政一直如同海綿般吸收著外界給予的養分與刺激，無助而又徬徨地思考自己的何去何從。成家後鍾肇政開始筆耕人生，追求他的文學志業，隨著歲月流逝，鍾肇政慢慢走入他人生的最後一哩路。他一生奉獻給台灣文學，書寫台灣這塊土地與人，為歷史留下見證。他還想再寫些什麼，但首要之事是照顧他生病臥床的老妻，兩人相濡以沫的情感在此書中恬靜安好的氛圍流淌……
