生命中最悲慘的遭遇，真有可能完全自記憶中根除？ 如果在根除記憶的過程中出了差錯，人生又會如何變化？ 十一月的深夜裡，在暗無人煙的森林裡，馬克‧魯卡斯獨自來到一棟木屋前，遲疑許久，然後用那隻骨折的手唯一還完好的一根指頭，按下了門鈴。 他沒有聽見門鈴聲，屋子裡沒有任何光線、聲響、動靜，顯示有人將來應門，儘管如此，當門突然開啟，像是被一隻看不見的手打開，馬克卻絲毫不覺得納悶。 應門的精神科醫生身穿西裝，領帶打得中規中矩，彷彿他一向在夜裡看診。 馬克費力央求著，「你得要告訴我，我不知道我出了什麼事……」 於是，在醫生的協助下，馬克開始回憶這些日子以來所發生的一切…… ※ ※ ※ 馬克現年三十二歲，是個法學博士，從事輔導街童工作，十七歲便和珊德拉相戀，進而結婚。但在六個星期前，懷有身孕的珊德拉在一場車禍中身亡，駕車的馬克雖然倖存，卻失去了對車禍前幾個小時的記憶。岳父說他後頸部位有一碎片插入，若不善加醫治，可能導致脊椎麻痺，因此他定期回醫院更換繃帶，並服用藥物。 車禍的夢魘揮之不去，馬克依稀想起在車禍發生前，他曾和珊德拉為了某事爭論，但始終想不起最關鍵的部分。他深受回憶折磨，有一天，在候診室裡翻閱一本雜誌，無意間發現一家名叫布萊伊托的心理醫院所刊登的廣告，標題是「學習遺忘」，該醫院聲稱正在研究一種能讓人遺忘痛苦回憶的方法，徵求自願者參與實驗。一時衝動之下，馬克便以email回覆表示願意參加。 一天，馬克成功地勸阻了一名企圖自殺的少女，正要離開現場時，布萊伊托醫院的院長說服馬克和他一起到了醫院，此時馬克已然改變心意，不想再參與該實驗，但仍虛應故事，接受了一些初步的檢查。 離開醫院後，馬克發現自己的人生大亂。他回到住處，發現鑰匙不合，更駭人的是，門旁的名牌上赫然寫著他太太娘家的姓氏「希納」，他惶惑之餘用力踢門，結果竟有人來應門，更不可思議的是，應門者居然是珊德拉，而且一副完全不認識他的表情，又迅速把門關上。 馬克覺得自己瀕臨瘋狂，由於吃藥的時間到了，而他進不了家門，拿不到藥物，便想去拿車裡的備份藥物，卻發現他的車不翼而飛。他想打電話給岳父，卻發現手機裡的電話簿一片空白，他請計程車司機試著撥他的手機號碼，結果他手中的手機未響，另一端卻有人接起了電話，並聲稱他便是馬克‧魯卡斯，那人身後並響起了珊德拉的笑聲…… 死去的人突然復活；幾棟大樓在轉瞬間憑空消失；被關在自宅地下室的人拿書給自己看，在書裡，可以讀到幾秒鐘後將會發生在自己身上的事……這一次的背後，究竟藏著什麼？ 出版社 商周出版
