全書共六章，先以歷時性行文介紹臺灣戲劇的發展背景，再依次就荷西、明鄭、清代、日據、戰後，以迄1980年代以後的臺灣戲劇，進行細緻的梳理，內容涵括傳統戲曲和現代戲劇二大專業及其相互影響關係，並介紹每一個階段發展特色，及其最具代表性的主流戲劇類型和次要類型。

本書撰述嚴謹，而文字可親，兼顧史觀和議題討論，納入新出諸多研究成果。除了提綱挈領傳授臺灣戲劇史相關必要知識之外，亦提供不同觀照角度及見解，有利於讀者進行批判性接受。
