從「個人記憶」到「集體記憶」 追尋戰後作為歷史記憶的「日本時代」 從1895至1945年的日本殖民地統治時期，臺灣一般習慣上也稱為「日本時代」。「日本時代」是一個歷史記憶的方法或過程，而非只是一個過去的「歷史階段」。日本時代的歷史記憶不僅存在於高階知識系譜的建構，同時也存在於一般大眾生活的日常活動場所及各種文化領域中。 本書共分三部，著重被殖民經驗過後，也就是二戰後臺灣社會在不同時期面對政治、經濟、社會等狀況變化時，對於過往日本帝國殖民時期知識與社會文化的重新理解。整體討論範圍涵蓋不同面向，包括從學術論述到民間議論的形構、從傳統的戲劇類型到大眾庶民的文化傳播、從個人的回憶到具有集體意義的歷史記憶，以及從律法的建構到檔案的製作管理等，恰恰體現歷史記憶運作的豐富面向與無所不在。
