為什麼要從「日華、日台雙重關係」來理解戰後的台日關係？ 七二年體制的困境、冷戰下的兩個中國、釣魚台列嶼爭端、台海飛彈危機……又是如何影響當時及其後的台日關係？ 日本與台灣相隔最近之處大約僅有100公里。雙方的經貿關係和人員往來十分密切。日本曾經對台灣進行過殖民統治，戰後統治台灣的是蔣介石領導的中國國民黨與中華民國政府，他們在1945年以前又是與日本進行戰爭的對手。無論是日華關係或是日台關係，都是理解東亞國際關係的時候，無法忽視的重要的雙邊關係。雙方雖然都存在著作為鄰居常有的「很了解對方」的錯覺，但實際情況卻是雙方缺乏理解彼此的基礎知識，也存在著許多誤解。另外還可以發現，身為第三者的中華人民共和國對於良好的日台關係，傾向做出負面的評價。 為了理解日台關係，最重要的就是應該要先有一個相當於指南的海圖，也就是基礎的日台關係的書籍。本書的目的就在於，不僅從雙邊關係，同時也從區域研究、全球性的角度，多面向、綜合性地闡明台日政治關係的歷史延續性和非連續性，是學界第一本以「台日關係」為分析對象的專書。內容始於1945年，一直論述至2020年蔡英文總統第一任期結束，對讀者而言，更像是一幅有定向、定位功能的「海圖」，有助於進一步從各方跨領域按圖索驥。
