在現代性的脈絡中，運動文化充滿著性別、階級、國族的隱喻。

過去學界鮮少以運動的題旨切入，探討現代藝術的發展軌跡及身體圖像的特徵涵義。本書聚焦十九世紀西方藝術中運動文化的豐碩圖像和表現手法，分析現代身體的形塑和涵意。此時正值藝術與運動蛻變的關鍵期，兩者皆在邁向現代化的進程中，逐步形成專業化和商業化的領域。視覺藝術具體反映了現代人對於身心健康的觀念嬗變，傳達運動中的自我認同及性別、階級、國族隱喻。

全書分為五章，著重於五項劃時代的作品系列或類型。主要內容包括杜米埃（Honore Daumier）的泳浴諷刺漫畫、庫爾貝（Gustave Courbet）的狩獵畫、竇加（Edgar Degas）的賽馬圖、卡意伯特（Gustave Caillebotte）的船艇水景、女性騎自行車的廣告海報。並參考社會學家布赫迪厄（Pierre Bourdieu）對於運動和習態（habitus）的洞察，立論現代身體的再現乃為喜劇、暴力、失落、秀異、動能的存在，蘊含多重的文化和美學意義。
