李登輝前總統的統治時期正好是台灣最重要的民主轉型期，他個人的政治主張及政治領導、與之相對應的體制及其所身處的時代和當時所面臨的挑戰，都相當值得研究，可統稱為「李登輝學」。面對當年環境巨變，國內解嚴、民主化、開放赴中經商，國際上中國經濟崛起、美國經濟的起落、亞洲金融危機，李前總統的對外與經貿戰略不是傳統的策略，也不是跟隨潮流的做法，而是用遠見開啟一種創新的領導與治理，最終帶領台灣走出自己的路。 研究「李登輝學」，既可說是研究「台灣學」，也是深化台灣民主，團結台灣人民的具體方式之一。本書由台灣智庫與李登輝基金會統籌，針對先前已進行的「李登輝學」系列活動，包括三次大型民調、一場前導講座、五場座談會、為期兩天的大型研討會和一場線上紀念講座，詳加記錄，書中呈現了各界專家學者對於李登輝的見解與定位，並以世代對話探討台灣今昔，引領我們繼續思考作為一個台灣人的意義、生為台灣人的悲哀與幸福，以及國家正常化的未竟之業。台灣人如何才能成為具有主體性的自由人、成為一個正常國家決定自己的模樣？這也將是本書期待所有台灣人在「李登輝學」的基礎上，跨越時代與世代共同探索的重要課題。
