全書共分七個章節，第一章「早期臺灣」描述了臺灣的地理環境與早期住民的社會生活；第二章「荷蘭入侵的38年」描述了臺灣在荷蘭與西班牙人殖民統治期間的社會經濟與抗爭歷史；第三章「明鄭時期」描述了鄭成功光復後的臺灣的發展；第四章「清代前期」描述清朝早期對臺灣的定位與社會發展；第五章「清代後期」描述滿清末期外國人的入侵與臺灣現代化的進程；第六章「日本統治的50年」描述日據時代的殖民統治與臺灣人的抗日活動；第七章「當代臺灣」描述臺灣光復到解除戒嚴時的臺灣政治與社會發展。
