台灣是1980年代全球第三波民主化的典型代表，
也是華人社會中第一個在和平的狀態下逐步實現民主制度的國家。
但是，今日的台灣面臨著許多內部問題與外在危機：
社會的高齡化以及由此產生的世代衝突；
中國長期威脅要以類似於香港的方式來統一這座美麗島，
加劇了島內的本土化問題。
台灣在國家安全上，嚴重依賴美國，
但它必須利用自己的資源來應對北京所施加的壓力。
台灣如何應對自身所面臨的內部與外部挑戰，
以及美國和其他大國如何施以援手，
將決定台灣是否能夠堅持自己的立場去面對中國所給予的壓力。
作者簡介
卜睿哲
研究台灣與中國事務的美國專家。
曾任職於美國國會、國家情報委員會、美國在台協會理事主席、
布魯金斯研究院東亞研究中心主任，
現於他曾領導逾十六年的布魯金斯研究院東亞研究中心
擔任客座資深研究員，
並擔任布魯金斯研究院辜振甫暨辜嚴倬雲台灣研究講座。
研究領域囊括東亞國際事務，
尤其關注美國與台灣、中國、日本、韓國之雙邊關係。
譯者簡介
周佳欣
愛爾蘭三一學院戲劇學院博士候選人，
美國紐約大學與西北大學表演研究雙碩士，
曾任教於美國華盛頓大學戲劇系、
愛爾蘭三一學院戲劇系及國立台南大學戲劇系、
國立中山大學外文系與長榮大學翻譯系，
教授西方戲劇史、戲劇分析、戲劇創作與英語課程。
長年涉獵多種表演訓練方法，
尤鍾愛女性獨角戲，曾於台灣、愛爾蘭、美國、德國等地演出，
也曾隨三一學院導演Dennis Kennedy
赴北京中央戲劇學院協助莎劇《皆大歡喜》的演出。
本身熱愛語言，亦為（中英、中法）譯者與（中英）口譯員，
並於文化大學推廣部教授中英口筆譯課程。
