1949年《中央日報》搬遷至臺灣後，報務發展迅速，於1954年便超越《臺灣新生報》，成為五○年代臺灣第一大報。五○年代《中央日報》在臺穩定、生根、茁壯，彷彿見證當年國民黨在風雨飄搖的環境下，重新站穩腳步的過程。 因此本書將回溯《中央日報》在大陸時期的發展，作為在臺發展的比較樣本，並試圖從兩岸政治環境的不同、報社本身所具有的優勢地位以及新聞管制等層面，說明《中央日報》如何褪去舊有包袱，在臺重生。國民黨掌握了重生的《中央日報》，才有辦法在政府風雨飄搖之際，藉由「改造」與「自由中國」的宣傳與建構來突圍脫困，並進一步求取外援。國民黨在臺政權的穩固，作為宣傳喉舌的《中央日報》，功不可沒。
