本書以「沉鬱頓挫」作為臺靜農書藝風格的主軸。「沉鬱」指得是內心情感，而「頓挫」指的是外在表現手法。本書在第一章〈閱讀「臺靜農」〉中回顧多年來學術界、藝文界對臺靜農的探討，並以〈沉鬱之心〉、〈頓挫之筆〉、〈臺靜農書藝特殊性〉作為主要架構。所謂的「沉鬱之心」，乃臺靜農內心深處的憤懣、鬱結。而內心的憤懣、鬱結，除了以隱喻的方式出現在部分詩文、論文中，潛心書藝是遣懷的重要方式。要表現「沉鬱」的情感，非以跌宕的「頓挫」技法不可，因此本書以「頓挫之筆」來闡述臺靜農書藝線條。透過臺靜農對碑帖的臨摹，凸顯其書藝線條的特徵，並以「頓挫」為主軸，說明臺靜農行草藝術的表現。至於將臺靜農放在與他有書藝往來的故友中，他的特殊性應如何被呈現？在生命經歷與藝術品味之間，又如何相異於其他書家？都是本書的核心議題。【秀威資訊科技股份有限公司製作】
