太平天國縱橫中國二十餘年（1850~1874），勢力遍及十八省，先後佔據六百多個府州縣。但在政體煙消雲散後，曾經汗牛充棟、隨處可見的太平天國印書、文書，卻在短短的二三十年內銷聲匿跡，近乎蕩然無存。洪秀全自稱「上帝的兒子」，神權與君權互相交織，後期更將國名改為「上帝天國」、「天父天兄天王太平天國」。由於史料缺乏及以宗教名義立國，不可避免帶上許多神祕色彩。作者透過清政府官方材料、涉入運動中的文人士大夫筆記、西方傳教士、西方報導等諸多方面入手，還原出這場運動的真實原貌。
