透過對太平洋島嶼文明的描述，與現代其他文明的比較，以理解、突出太平洋島民的智慧。島嶼的文明受制於以下的基本條件：即居住的環境被海洋包圍，食物來源較多取自於海洋，以海洋為重要的活動天地，或者說由於海洋的隔絕，只能以封閉的島嶼內陸為生活天地。由於與外界缺乏交流，文化保持濃厚、強烈的個性。符合這些條件的島嶼主要集中在大洋洲地區。因此，一言以蔽之，本書的重點就在於介紹具有海島文明特色的大洋洲島嶼文明及其智慧。
