La intolerancia, asiento de fundamentalismos, recorre nuestro mundo, donde la marginación y el racismo potencian una cultura del miedo a la diferencia, de pavor por aquello que se percibe como distinto. Distinto es el otro, y el otro es un enemigo. Al pensar la democracia, la cultura occidental generó una ética y un conjunto de “reglas del tener razón”: opinar, argumentar, disentir, apoyar, refutar, convencer, disuadir. Dicha cultura produjo también una ciencia que cuestionó las bases de un pensamiento mágico religioso sobre el cual se fundaron concepciones de superioridad de unos pueblos respecto a otros. Los ensayos reunidos en el presente libro responden a estas preocupaciones y parten de la premisa de que el concepto de extranjero condensa un proyecto que desde antiguo viene elaborando la cultura de Occidente. El punto de partida es la figura del otro, a través del cual se recorta nuestra propia identidad. Un otro, un extranjero que no es más que un espejo deformante de nuestro sentido de lo individual. Desde disciplinas como el psicoanálisis, la literatura, la antropología, la historia y la biología, los autores dan cuenta de ese juego de refracciones entre un nosotros y los otros, tratando de explicar o cuestionar aquello que por su naturaleza diverge de los usos de una comunidad.
