Sassen analiza el modo en que los tres componentes de toda sociedad -territorio, autoridad y derechos- han cambiado en sí mismos y en sus relaciones a lo largo de tres "ensamblajes" históricos fundamentales: el medieval, el nacional y el global. Para ello, estudia la emergencia del Estado-nación a través del reposicionamiento sustancial de determinadas capacidades medievales; analiza las condiciones políticas, económicas, legales o tecnológicas inscritas en nuevas lógicas organizativas que van de lo nacional hacia lo global, y examina las intersecciones puntuales entre lo territorial, la autoridad y los derechos, con especial atención al papel de las nuevas tecnologías digitales.
