与「活道」系列其他经卷的课程一样，《以斯拉记·尼希米记》课程同样是从结合经文的认知和反省入手，让学员通过深入的阅读和回答课文所提供的问题，来清楚地理解经文内容及其写作处境，并藉反思开放心灵，让神的话语转化思想和态度，在所处的环境中实践经文的教导，见证神对人的恩典和大爱。

在希伯来文圣经中，以斯拉记和尼希米记本属同一经卷，所记载的是被掳归回时期约一百年间以色列民的事蹟（见「引言」）。全书涵盖三个主题──重建圣殿、重建圣民和重建圣城，其中重建圣民为重複出现的主题。考虑到以斯拉记和尼希米记的连贯性，「活道」课程系列把它们编在同一册课本之内，第一至第六课为以斯拉记，第七至第十二课为尼希米记。
