在希伯来文圣经中,以斯拉记和尼希米记本属同一经卷,所记载的是被掳归回时期约一百年间以色列民的事蹟(见「引言」)。全书涵盖三个主题──重建圣殿、重建圣民和重建圣城,其中重建圣民为重複出现的主题。考虑到以斯拉记和尼希米记的连贯性,「活道」课程系列把它们编在同一册课本之内,第一至第六课为以斯拉记,第七至第十二课为尼希米记。
