「活道」系列课程从结合经文的认知和反省入手，让学员通过深入的阅读和回答课文所提供的问题，来清楚地理解经文内容及其写作处境，并藉反思开放心灵，让神的话语转化思想和态度，在所处的环境中实践经文的教导，见证神对人的恩典和大爱。

按照希伯来圣经的编排（它与基督教圣经的编排不同），五小卷位于正典的第三部分「圣卷」中，这五卷相对较短的着作紧贴在箴言之后，包括路得记、雅歌、传道书、哀歌和以斯帖记。犹太人会在特定的节期在会堂裡诵读这五卷书——逾越节读雅歌，五旬节读路得记，住棚节读传道书，亚比月九日记念圣殿被毁时读哀歌，以及在普珥节读以斯帖记。由于古时的犹太人在礼拜仪节间以羊皮纸书卷诵读经文，到今天他们读以斯帖记时仍沿用这种做法，致令这五个经卷被称为megillot ，即希伯来语的「书卷」。

除了在犹太人的礼拜仪节中诵读之外，这五卷书的内容几乎没有什麽共同点。虽然雅歌和哀歌的形式是诗歌体裁，路得记和以斯帖记是以女性为主角的故事，这两个组别的着作氛围和目的，却有鲜明的对比。至于传道书却是希伯来智慧运动的产物，所表现的是希伯来圣经中最独特的智慧观点。
