「箴言」，意即「規戒之語」，和約伯記、傳道書同稱為「智慧文學」，主要探討生活和信仰的現實。作者以古老格言的形式表達出生活的智慧，並將一些老生常談的大小道理，變成有趣易記的俗語，使那些看起來陳舊的觀念，成為宜古宜今的真知灼見。
