«Las ilusiones perdidas» es una novela en serie escrita entre 1837 y 1843. Consta de tres partes, que comienzan en la provincia de Francia, luego se trasladan a París y finalmente regresan a las provincias. Por lo tanto, se parece a otra de las mejores novelas de Balzac, La Rabouilleuse (La oveja negra, 1842), ya que se desarrolla en parte en París y en parte en las provincias.
