Brief Synopsis for Murder on the Rocks by Kevin Zahn Murder on the Rocks is a recently completed manuscript of 64,000 words. The story is set in the red rock country near Sedona, Arizona. The protagonist is Will Johansen, a retired merchant marine captain. He and his wife, Katie, live a pleasant life in beautiful Red Rock Valley. While out walking his dog, a tri-colored collie named Sassie, that peace is shattered. Sassie discovers a dead body in the woods -- that of a Forest Service Ranger. The county sheriff is called, and soon makes the determination that it was a suicide. Will cannot believe that, and gets involved to prove it was murder. His motivation is something that happened to him on his first voyage as captain, many years ago. The memory haunts him, but he thinks if he can help solve the case, the nightmares might go away. Katie doesn't like it, but puts up with it. Will realizes that he needs help proving his theory, and enlists a neighbor, Rob, a retired FBI agent. They succeed in getting the jurisdiction for the case to the FBI, which agrees with the murder theory. Several suspects emerge, most notably Bob O'Conner, who owns a land management company -- he also lives nearby. The middle part of the story is filled with suspects, evidence, speculation and attempted entrapment. There is a seduction scene as well as a car chase. Will has to arm himself for self-defense. His limited experience with guns is an issue. Katie, who hates guns, knows that things are serious and surprisingly insists he carry one. He eventually has to use it in a dangerous confrontation with a suspect. Sassie plays an important role. Will and Rob get another helper -- a young reporter for the local paper, Don, who has contacts with a larger paper and does background for them. Rob gets upset at things and vows to catch the killer even if he has to break a few rules. Being retired FBI means the Bureau will look the other way at times. Towards the end the FBI makes an arrest. All are sure he is guilty. Will, Rob and Don, with wives and a girlfriend, party and celebrate. Katie is glad that Will can return his pistol, and there will not be a killer living in their neighborhood. Or is that true? Will wakes up early, in a fit. He tells Katie that they have the wrong guy! The questions are whether he is correct, and can he prove it? That quest leads to a dramatic conclusion. An Epilogue spells out where the main characters end up six months later.
