Abstract: Body image disturbances are a central component of the development and maintenance of eating disorder attitudes and behaviors. Literature has shown that increasing recognition of external influences and shifting perspective to body functionality can be beneficial in combating body image issues. The purpose of this project was to develop a nutrition intervention guide to address body image disturbances among adolescents undergoing a residential treatment program for a clinically diagnosed eating disorder. Specifically, the guide consists of four educational sessions that focus on recognizing external influences on body image, improving body appreciation, and normalizing eating behaviors and attitudes through exploration of body functionality. Design, functionality and content of the guide were evaluated by an expert panel of Registered Dietitian Nutritionists who specialize in the treatment of eating disorders. Overall, the assessment of the guide was positive, and feedback provided by the expert panel was used to revise the guide. For further evaluation of the efficacy of this guide, a research study could be conducted to evaluate the impact on body image disturbances among the target population.
