During the time that the supercontinent was splitting apart, the Northern peoples started sailing south, looking to sack, rape and pillage villages where they could. It happened that they landed at a small seaside village, did their sacking, raping and pillaging, then sailed off again. It was some 9 months later that one of the village maidens gave birth to a large baby boy. The yellow straw coloured hair of the baby, the same colour as the Northern raiders, as well as his features, reflected his parentage. Virtually ignored by the villagers, Con was a lonely child who kept to himself. By the time he was 15 years old, he was a huge figure, some 6 feet 4 inches in height, the average height of the villagers being about 5 feet 4 inches, with a mop of yellow hair which cascaded down around his shoulders. His only real enjoyment growing up was sitting listening to villagers tell tales of barbarian heroes fighting off raiders and warlocks single-handed, and saving maidens in distress. Con knew his destiny was to be a great barbarian warrior. Having found a sword with a broken point discarded on the beach by the Northern raiders, he spent most of his days in the forest swinging the sword, chopping branches and imagining they were the heads and limbs of enemies he was cutting off. After he was seen wielding the sword, the villagers held a meeting and then told Con he must leave and find his own way in the world. And so Con, uneducated, with just his sword, a few provisions and no knowledge of the world, set off to find his destiny. Con A Barbarian is a tale of the old barbarian days, the adventures and trials Con goes through after being conned by a travel agency advertisement. This is an easy read for some light escapism back to the days when there were barbarians at the gate.
